Man shot, killed at son’s funeral

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 26-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday while attending his son’s funeral services.

Jeramie Shorter, of Davenport, Iowa, was attending a visitation service for his 8-year-old son that was set to be held from 9 a.m. to noon, according to a local newspaper. The child had died July 18 after a battle with cancer, WQAD-TV reported.

Around 11:30 a.m., law enforcement received calls of a reported disturbance in the parking lot of Weerts Funeral Home, where someone had been shot.

Callers said a man, later identified as 24-year-old Nuemonei Laster, had brandished a handgun and shot Shorter before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Shorter was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police pursued Laster in a high-speed chase through residential areas before the pursuing officers lost sight of his vehicle. Laster was later spotted again, and officials chased him on foot.

He was caught Saturday night and taken into custody.

Laster, who is being held without bond in Scott County Jail, has been charged with first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, eluding and interference with official acts with a weapon.

While an explicit motive has not been released, official documents noted “the defendant willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation shot the victim, causing the victim’s death. The defendant admitted post Miranda to shooting the victim,” KWQC-TV reported.
