According to KTLA and KTTV, the incident occurred about 8 a.m. Friday at Yvonne Burke-John D. Ham Park. A passer-by discovered the infant in a bathroom trash can and alerted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, officials said in a news release.

Emergency crews took the baby, who was no more than 2 days old, to a nearby hospital, where he was in stable condition, the department said. Investigators have not identified the newborn’s parents, according to the news outlets.

Now, investigators are “asking for the public’s help with any information regarding the abandonment and endangerment of the newborn baby boy,” whom they described as “Hispanic and/or African American,” the release said. The Sheriff’s Department also is trying to locate a person of interest – a 5-foot-4, 120- to 125-pound Hispanic woman in her late teens or early 20s – in connection with the case, KTTV reported.

If you have information about the incident, call the Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau at 1-877-710-5273 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
