Library officials in a suburban Tulsa city thanked a resident for returning a book that had been overdue since 1976, KOKI-TV reported.

According to a Facebook post, the Owasso Library said the copy of “Annie, Annie” by Molly Cone was supposed to be returned to the Central Library in Tulsa. The stamp on the inside pocket of the book noted that the book was due Sept. 8, 1976.

“Only 46 years overdue!” the library wrote on Facebook.

The book was released in 1969 and features Annie, a girl who mistakes her parents’ habit of allowing her to make her own decisions for lack of affection. To counter that habit, Annie takes a job as a live-in maid with the Sigbys, a highly organized family that has rules for everything.

“For those of you who are worried about late fines ... this book was checked out before computer systems, so there was no way for us to tell who had it checked out,” library officials wrote. “Plus, the library no longer charges overdue fines, so no worries either way.”

It would have not cost the borrowers a lot of money if fines had been in effect, even now. Library officials said the penalty for overdue books was originally capped at $2.
