Yahoo Sports reported that Australia’s Tomljanovic beat Williams in a match that went on for three hours. Tomljanovic won the first set, Williams won the second set following a heated tiebreaker and Tomljanovic eventually won the third set. Yahoo Sports said that the end of this match may have been one of the most-watched matches of the U.S. Open.

According to The Associated Press, the third round is expected to be the last match of Williams’ career. Williams who turned 41 later this month has said that she is planning to evolve from playing tennis into other ventures.

The AP said that Williams cried on the court immediately after the game and she was asked if she would reconsider “evolving” from tennis and she said, “I don’t think so, but you never know.”

The first time Williams played in the Grand Slam was in New York in 1999 when she was just 17 and has gone on to win 23 championships in her career since, according to the AP.

Williams announced on August 9 that she is planning to retire from playing tennis professionally in an article she wrote for Vogue.

“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution,” she wrote. “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

According to the AP, Tomljanovic is 29 years old and ranked No. 46. Tomljanovic will advance and face Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the fourth round, according to CNN.
