‘SNL’ returns with Alec Baldwin’s Trump debating Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden

NEW YORK — Live, from New York, sketch comedy in front of a studio audience is back.

With Alec Baldwin returning as President Donald Trump and actor Jim Carrey transforming into former Vice President Joe Biden, long-running, live sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live returned for its 46th season, with a political parody of this election’s first presidential debate.

Similar to Trump’s performance Tuesday, Baldwin commandeered the satirical debate in the show’s cold open, peppering Carrey’s Biden with insults and interruptions.

“Look man, I’m a nice guy, but you give anymore guff tonight, I’ll rip your face off like a mad chimp,” Carrey yelled before talking to himself. “The country’s counting on you Joe. Just stand here and look lucid.”

Maya Rudolph made a cameo as Sen. Kamala Harris in the sketch.

Former cast member Chris Rock hosted and rapper Megan Thee Stallion performed. Rock’s opening monologue made jabs at the coronavirus pandemic, the bizarreness of 2020 and Trump.

“What job do you have for 4 years no matter what? Just show me one job. If you hired a cook, and he was making people vomit every day, do you sit there and say ‘Oh, he’s got a 4-year deal,’” he said. “We just got to vomit for four more years.”

Rock was a member of the show for three years. He left in 1993.
