Tropical Storm Beta makes landfall in Texas

PORT O'CONNOR, Texas — Tropical Storm Beta made landfall in Texas late Monday, bringing heavy rains and the threat of flooding to the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In its 11 p.m. CDT update, the agency said the center of the storm, which had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, crossed the Texas coast near the southern end of the Matagorda Peninsula about an hour earlier. It was about 5 miles north of Port O’Connor, 25 miles west-southwest of Matagorda and moving northwest at 3 mph, forecasters said.

As of 10 p.m. CDT, a storm surge warning remained in effect for Port Aransas to Sabine Pass, including Copano Bay, Aransas Bay, San Antonio Bay, Matagorda Bay and Galveston Bay. A tropical storm warning was in effect for Port Aransas to Morgan City, Louisiana.

According to The Associated Press, Beta was expected to head into Louisiana sometime midweek and bring possible flash flooding to Arkansas and Mississippi as it moves farther inland.
