Waffle House shooting leaves 1 employee dead, others hurt in South Carolina

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A woman is dead and other people are hurt after gunfire erupted outside a Waffle House in South Carolina.

According to WCBD, Waffle House employee Briawna Nabors, 23, was shot after a dispute escalated outside the North Charleston restaurant early Saturday. Nabors, who had not been involved in the altercation, died at the scene shortly before 1 a.m., North Charleston police said. Others also were hurt in the shooting, including a Waffle House customer who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the restaurant said in a statement Sunday.

"We are devastated and mourning the tragic death of one of our Waffle House associates, who was the unintended victim of senseless and reckless acts of violence that occurred early yesterday morning in the parking area of one of our North Charleston, S.C., restaurants," read the statement obtained by WCBD.

"An apparent parking lot shootout between three men led to our associate's death, and what we believe to be nonfatal injuries to one of our customers, who we understand was waiting to pick up a to-go order. We remain concerned for our customer's condition and hope she will have a full recovery."

Police later arrested Rico Joy, 39, in connection with the shooting, WCIV reported. He faces charges of murder and attempted murder, as well as a weapons charge, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Waffle House said it is cooperating with police in the ongoing probe, according to WCIV.
