Woman suspected of sending ricin-laced letter to White House arrested

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A woman suspected of sending a ricin-laced envelope addressed to the White House was arrested Sunday while attempting to enter the United States from Canada.

A U.S. law enforcement official confirmed the arrest to CNN, noting the woman was apprehended at a border crossing in New York state.

According to the official, the woman was carrying a gun when arrested by U.S. authorities, and charges are expected to be filed against her in Washington, D.C.

The letter had been intercepted earlier this week before reaching the White House.

The unidentified woman was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing near Buffalo and is expected to face federal charges, The Associated Press reported.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have confirmed the letter appeared to have originated in Canada.
