Charlotte Fire Department promoting first African American woman to the rank of engineer

The Charlotte Fire Department will be promoting an African American woman to the rank of engineer for the first time on Saturday.
Venessa Roy was hired as a firefighter on Sept. 21, 2009, and is currently assigned to Fire Station 28, located at 8031 Old Statesville Road.
"It's a blessing to see your hard work pay off and I can say that I'm excited to take on my new role as an engineer driver operator, Roy said. “I am truly humbled by all the love and support that I have received from my family, friends, classmates and co-workers over the course of my 10-year career.”
Roy went through a competitive testing process for the rank of engineer before being promoted.
Roy is also the Camp Ignite director for the Charlotte Fire Department’s all girls camp, a free camp created to build courage and confidence in high school girls while introducing them to the fire service and other public service careers.
It's an honor to serve the communities of Charlotte and represent for the women," Roy said.
Roy, a 2008 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics.
She will start her new position on Saturday at Charlotte Fire Department’s station No. 3.
