• SPONSORED: Toyota of N Charlotte shares tips for traveling with dogs

Are you thinking about hitting the road with your four-legged friend? Believe it or not, you do have to do a little more than have them jump into the backseat before take to the highway. In order to keep your dog safe and happy, you should prep accordingly! Our N Charlotte Toyota dealership has tips to get your car AND your pet ready before you hit the road. Let’s get started!

Pet car safety is paramount when traveling with your dog

Pet car safety tip #1: Think about keeping your pet secure. When your car is in motion, you wear a seatbelt, right? It keeps you from being thrown around or out of the car in the case of an accident. Do your pet the same favor. Our N Charlotte Toyota dealership recommends investing in a pet safety harness for the car, or a crate or cage to keep them in while you’re in motion. Remember, not only can they be injured, they can become a heavy projectile that can injure you, too! You might also consider a pet barrier to keep them in the backseat where it’s safer.

Pet car safety tip #2: Plan where you’re going. Is your destination pet-friendly? If not, what are you going to do with your dog when you arrive? NEVER leave your dog unattended in the car no matter the weather. Temperatures can rise and fall quickly and leave your dog injured or worse. If your destination isn’t a good place for Fido, our N Charlotte Toyota dealership recommends leaving your dog at home!

Pet car safety tip #3: Be sure to stop for bathroom breaks. When you’re on a road trip, you stop to stretch your legs and use the restroom. Give your pet the same courtesy! Be sure to keep them on a leash, though. They’ll be much happier when you get back on the highway.

Pet car safety tip #4: Pack food, water, treats, and medication. You want to keep your pet well-fed and hydrated, and you want to ensure you have treats to give them as well as their regular medication. However, never feed your pet a full meal before you hit the road – the motion could unsettle their stomach and make them sick if they’re full.
