Ch. 9 takes a trip in blimp over San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — Sports anchor Lawrence Gilligan took a ride Friday in the Good Year Blimp over San Francisco as Super Bowl 50 approaches.

"Guys, I think the song 'Lights' by Journey kicked in," Gilligan said. "The city of San Francisco is great to take in on foot but from 1,500 feet above, it's breathtaking."

The blimp took Gilligan over Oakland, Treasure Island and San Francisco where he could see the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower and Alcatraz.

Pilot Matthew St. John said out of about 250 sporting events Good Year covers in the air, football is his favorite.

Although the blimp is in the Bay area for now, it will not shoot aerials of Super Bowl 50.

The last time they captured a birds-eye view of the big game was Super Bowl 30 in 2001.
