INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — Charlotte Country Day claimed its first state championship in nearly a decade.
The Buccaneers escaped with a 17-14 win over Metrolina Christian Friday night in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Division II title game.
Country Day (8-5) scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:09 remaining in the WSOC-TV High School Football Extra Game of the Week.
Metrolina Christian took its lead, 14-10, with a touchdown late in the third quarter before Country Day rallied.
The Buccaneers won their first championship since 2010.
Country Day also beat Metrolina Christian, 39-25, in the first round of last year’s playoffs before going on to lose to Charlotte Latin in the championship game.
Country Day is led by offensive lineman Triston Miller, a Big 22 Player to Watch who is committed to play college football at North Carolina State.
Metrolina Christian (8-4) was the No. 2 seed in the playoff brackets.
