Carolina Panthers plan to keep head coach Matt Rhule for 2022 NFL season, sources say

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers plan to keep head coach Matt Rhule for the 2022 NFL season, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Rhule will also begin a thorough search for an offensive coordinator next week, sources told Fowler Saturday.

According to ESPN, 46-year-old Rhule has a career record of 10-22 heading into Sunday’s season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On Dec. 5, The Carolina Panthers relieved offensive coordinator Joe Brady of his duties with five games remaining. Senior offensive assistant Jeff Nixon took Brady’s place for the rest of the season.

According to ESPN, Panthers owner David Tepper hired Rhule in January 2020 to succeed Ron Rivera, who was fired with four games remaining in the 2019 season.

Tepper gave him a seven-year, $62 million contract in addition to paying $6 million to buy out Rhule’s deal at Baylor.

The Panthers were 5-11 during Rhule’s first season, losing nine of their final 11 games, according to ESPN.

This season, the Panther have lost six straight and 11 of their past 13 games overall.

They are set to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
