Heavier precipitation rates spreading northeast across the North Carolina foothills and northwest piedmont late this evening will cause rapid accumulations of ice from freezing rain across the area. Some sleet may mix in at times late this evening along and north of Interstate 40, but freezing rain will become predominant throughout by the very early morning hours. Conditions will worsen further overnight as the freezing rain continues to accumulate on trees, limbs, power lines, and overpasses. Roads, and especially bridges, may ice up very quickly, making walking or driving hazardous. Travel across the Winter Storm Warning, and nearby Advisory areas, should be postponed. $$
