FORECAST: Cold front to bring strong afternoon storms

THURSDAY: Conditions remained quiet early Thursday morning, but active weather will start up around the region by the afternoon. A cold front moving into the mountains during the afternoon will spark thunderstorm development, and those storms will then move south toward Charlotte late in the afternoon and evening.

Some storms could be quite strong, with heavy rain and strong winds. Those downpours may linger well into the night across the metro and points south of Charlotte.

The rain could be heavy, with strong winds impacting the evening commute (and the start of the Panthers preseason game). Behind the cold front, much drier and cooler air arrives through the holiday weekend.

FRIDAY: We continue to watch Tropical Storm Hermine coming our way Friday. The rain from this storm will start up in the morning and could last most of the day along and south of Interstate 85. The last rain will likely move out late Friday night into the pre-dawn hours of Saturday. Rainfall totals could be an inch or more in Charlotte, with three inches or more for southeastern counties

Adjustments to Hermine's path will be adjusted as we head into the end of the work week, so continue to check in with WSOC for the latest.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Conditions will clear out by Saturday afternoon, with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures expected for the first half of the holiday weekend. Temperatures will steadily climb back into the low 90s by Labor Day, but the quiet and dry weather will continue.
