WEATHER ALERT:
- A winter storm warning has been issued for Avery County from 7 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday. Locations like Banner Elk and Newland could see three to six inches of heavy snow along with 45 mph wind gusts.
- Winter weather advisories for Watauga and Ashe counties have also been issued from 7 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday. Snow accumulations could reach two to four inches with wind gusts up to 40 mph.
- An extreme cold watch for Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties from 4 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Wednesday. Wind chills could reach as low as negative 20 degrees.
FORECAST:
- We saw some nice rain this morning, but we are drying things out in the metro. Sunday will be a transition day with highs in the metro in the middle 50s.
- While we enjoy a nice day, the mountains will be seeing some mountain-induced snow showers as the arctic air arrives.
- That arctic air will arrive in the metro on Monday with breezy to downright windy conditions and much colder air.
- Highs will struggle to make it to freezing on Monday through Wednesday.
- We will have to watch out for sporadic power outages and burst pipes with these cold temperatures this week. It could cause some issues out there.
