Major road closure in Union County impacts back-to-school traffic

CHARLOTTE — As parents, students and teachers head back to school in Union County on Monday, a major road closure is impacting traffic to some schools in the district.

The Union County School District planned their bus routes to deal with the construction at the intersection of Marvin Road and New Town Road, where the NCDOT is constructing a roundabout.

Neighbors in the area have been asking for improvements on the busy road, but they say it’s too close to the school year and will be frustrating.

The NCDOT says the roundabout will improve traffic flow and safety.

“With the close down on Marvin Road, it’s probably going to be a lot worse,” Antonio Santos, a resident nearby, said.

For the next two months, drivers should plan ahead when heading to Marvin Elementary.

Construction crews began the project in mid-August, and it is slated to wrap at the end of October.

Union County schools is warning there will likely be bus delays because of the construction and the district’s driver shortage.
