Old ammunition dug up at Frito-Lay factory in southwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An employee digging Wednesday night at the Frito-Lay plant in southwest Charlotte discovered old ammunition and mortars on the property, officials told Channel 9.

That employee called authorities at about 5:40 p.m. and emergency crews responded to the scene on Nevada Boulevard.

Authorities then contacted the military because the unexploded ordnances were on government-issued property.

Detectives worked with a military explosive ordnance team, and were able to clear the scene late Wednesday night.

No employees were injured and nothing was detonated, authorities said. Nevada Boulevard was shut down for hours in both directions as a precaution.

The land was previously the Camp Green Military Base, and the particular area was used as an ammunition depot.

Frito Lay released this statement:

“The team at our Charlotte production facility contacted the local police and fire department for assistance with an issue that arose during excavation for a planned construction project.

A few items of what appears to be military ammunition were discovered by the crew at the excavation site – which previously served as a military ammunition depot -- and the matter has required local authorities to investigate further.  We are cooperating fully.

Police and fire department representatives have confirmed the safety of our facility and all employees, and plant production is continuing as normal.”
