Teen girl makes miraculous recovery after being hit by car, family says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Kannapolis teenager is making a miraculous recovery after being hit by a car in November.

On Sunday, family members of 13-year-old McKenzie "Kenzie" Graham opened up to Channel 9 in an exclusive interview outside Levine Children's Hospital.

The teen has been in the hospital for more than a month after being hit by a car Nov. 13 on Coventry Road.

Kenzie suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. She has already been through multiple surgeries.

Family members said if the driver who hit Kenzie had not stopped, she likely would have died.

"She's full of life, and she's hard-working and a strong person," her mother Tammy Currie said. "And that's why she's still here today fighting."

The middle schooler plays softball and was President of the National Junior Honor Society. She has a long recovery ahead that will require extensive therapy.

"We want to give McKenzie everything we can, and we don't want to stop for financial reasons," her sister Alexis Graham said.

Christmas is coming early for Kenzie's family -- doctors expect Kenzie to go home on Wednesday.

“It's an indescribable feeling to know my sister's going to get to home from Christmas. It's a miracle," Alexis said.

Family members also told Channel 9 that the school system rallied behind them and held a fundraiser to help with the cost of Kenzie's medical care.
