2 accused of stealing mail from dozens of Lancaster residents

LANCASTER, S.C. — Two people are accused of stealing mail from more than 50 people in Lancaster.

Matthew McCory, 41, and Cierra Oxandaboure, 29, were pulled over last week for a license tag violation and deputies said they found 134 packages and letters in their vehicle.

Sheriff’s deputies believe that all the thefts were from mailboxes in rural stretches between Lancaster and Pageland, places including Taxahaw, Overbrook and Rocky River roads, authorities said.

Investigators contacted some of the victims, who said the couple should not have had their mail.

"There were some things we thought we were supposed to get in the mail that just never came,” Charlene Gainer said. "Anybody can just come and take something of yours at any time, and you don't have any control over it."

The couple was found Friday night in their car outside a store with a 4-year-old.

Deputies got a search warrant Tuesday for Oxandaboure's home on Taxahaw Road and said they found more stolen mail, including someone's tax refund check.

"I don't understand it, but I think it's sad that they have to do that,” Larry Robertson said. "It's bad, especially if you live in a neighborhood and you're stealing from your neighbors."

Robertson’s neighbor received a call from the sheriff last week telling him that they had his medication, which said they found in the couple's car.

The mail and packages were turned over to a postal inspector, who will get the mail to the intended recipients.

“Based upon postmark and check dates, we believe this has been going on for a couple of months,” Lancaster Sheriff Barry Faile said. “I doubt we found all the mail that has been taken, and there are likely other victims."

McCoy and Oxandaboure are out of jail on bond. They could face more charges.
