Albemarle police search for killer after man found shot to death in road

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Police are looking for the gunman who shot a man to death early Tuesday morning in Albemarle.

Officers told Channel 9 that Mondrell Leake was shot around 1 a.m. on N. Seventh Street, between East Main Street and Pee Dee Avenue.

Neighbors told detectives that they heard loud talking and several gunshots before calling 911.

When officers got to the scene, they found Leake lying in the road. They tried to perform first aid but he died within minutes, according to officials.

Investigators said no arrests have been made but authorities are looking for the gunman, who may be driving a red passenger car, possibly a Honda or Acura.

No other details about the crime have been released.
