Sheriff: Man, 47, arrested in Union Co. double homicide

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A Union County man confessed in court Wednesday morning to shooting and killing his father-in-law and brother-in-law.

Bradrick Wolfe is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of David Lee Bass and David Clay Bass.

Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey said he is behaving unlike any other suspect he's seen.

"It was pretty surprising what happened in court today," he said. "He gave his side to the judge and his side was, 'I did it.'"

The shooting occurred at the Bass home on Lanesboro Road in Marshville Tuesday night.

Prosecutors said Wolfe and his wife, Tonya, were in the midst of separating and she took her kids with her to stay with her father.

They said Wolfe showed up wanting to see them, but Tonya's brother David Clay Bass told Wolfe to leave and they started arguing.

Prosecutors said Wolfe shot him twice, and when Tonya's father came out and began wrestling with him, Wolfe shot him three times.

Wolfe took off on his motorcycle, but Sheriff Cathey said once he was in custody, he answered all their questions.

"He has volunteered more information than probably anybody that I've ever seen," he said.

Neighbors couldn't believe Wolfe's confession.

"It's a shame," Jarvis Gainey said. "It's just a tragedy because down here it's very quiet, everybody's peaceful. Everybody knows each other in the community."

At Wolfe's home in Wingate, a family friend told Eyewitness News: "We miss David Lee Bass and David Clay Bass very much. We're grieving... we just can't wrap our minds around it."

Eyewitness News discovered Wolfe's criminal past dates back three decades, beginning in 1982 when he was just 17 years old.

He has several previous convictions in Forsyth County, including assault with a deadly weapon and felony breaking and entering.

He is due back in court in October.
