Some dogs from suspected puppy mill up for adoption at Charlotte Humane Society

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — The 18 dogs brought to the Humane Society of Charlotte after they were rescued from a suspected puppy mill in Cabarrus County are now up for adoption.

The 18 dogs are all Yorkie and other breeds. Those dogs were part of the more than 100 that were rescued from a suspected puppy mill last month.

The Humane Society of Charlotte did veterinary examines on each animal, and did a behavioral analysis.

“Hopefully we can turn them around them around really quick, but as you can see some of these dogs are really scared and the last things we want to do if place them in a home and not prepare that adoption, what they really are going to be facing,” Ortega said.

Eight other agencies across North Carolina will be in charge of the recovery effort for the other dogs, cats, and goats that were rescued.

Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said Patricia Yates is facing animal cruelty charges for keeping the animals at her home in Kannapolis.

Mandy Duplisea bought a 10-week-old Chorkie puppy from Yates two years ago. The dog was a gift for her mother. She inquired about the puppy on PetFinder and contacted Yates to see it in person. Yates refused to meet at her house, claiming it was under construction. The two met at a Quick Trip gas station in Kannapolis.

“Once I saw the puppy, and saw the interaction it seemed to be OK so she seemed believable,” Duplisea said.

Yates supplied all the right veterinary paperwork, and showed no red flags, she said.

“I was really glad that we were able to rescue him, but hindsight, I feel bad for his parents,” Duplisea said. “I really thought he was a product of two retired ladies trying to make a living. I had no idea that he was a product of a puppy mill.”

Families interesting in giving one of the dogs a new home should contact the Humane Society of Charlotte directly. Their phone number is 704-377-0534.

They are located 2700 Toomey Ave. in Charlotte.
