Charlotte Motor Speedway offers refuge, extra help to hurricane evacuees

The Rock City campground at the Charlotte Motor Speedway is offering shelter to those who evacuated from Florida.

On Monday, the campground was mostly empty.

However, officials said they are starting to get more evacuees.

Florida evacuee Charlie Trasak said he never planned on coming to Charlotte but Irma wasn't something he wanted to experience

“I lived through that before, but that one scared the heck out of me,” Trasak said.

At first, Trasak went to Atlanta, but he said he came to Charlotte when the winds picked up in Georgia.

“We ended up leaving yesterday because the wind was blowing so hard so we decided to come to Charlotte,” Trasak said.

Channel 9 spoke to another evacuee who just found out his home has water and roof damage.

On top of that, his truck broke down just outside of Charlotte.

The Speedway offered to help and called up their own mechanics.

“(Speedway officials) said we have a hurricane evacuee up in rock city. They said we gotta go help him. I said okay,” Speedway mechanic David Phildmon said.

So while Trasak waits out the storm, at least there is one less problem on his mind.

“Thanks to the folks that are doing what they can to help the victims of Irma,” Trasak said.

Speedway officials said they will keep the campground open for anyone who wants to evacuate.
