Citizens Review Board, CMPD prepare for August hearing in Scott case

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Citizens Review Board in Charlotte sided with the family of a man killed by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.

The CRB said Tuesday night they believe the Police Department may have gotten it wrong when they cleared the officer who shot Keith Lamont Scott in September.

They want a hearing to review all the evidence and police said Wednesday they're ready to do that.

“We stand by our decision,” Maj. Stella Patterson with CMPD Internal Affairs said.

She led the team that met with the CRB to explain why they believe Officer Brantley Vinson didn't violate any department policies when he shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott.

The review board said they believe there was evidence of error by the department after four hours of testimony from CMDP and attorneys for Scott's family.

Patterson said she couldn't discuss specifics of the case because it's ongoing, but she did say the board has just taken the first step.

“They had the preliminary hearing, but now they're going to have the evidentiary hearing,” Patterson said. “After that hearing's complete, then we'll know more of the conclusion of what they've determined.”

That hearing is set for August and could resemble a mini-trial, with both sides presenting evidence.

If the review board finds that CMPD was wrong in not disciplining Vinson or any other officers involved in the Scott shooting, they could ask the city manager to have CMPD reconsider their ruling.

Until then CMPD and Patterson are not commenting any further on the case.

“So, we just really have to wait for this to play out, the whole process, and see what happens,” Patterson said.
