Man accused of shooting 5-year-old girl faces judge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The man accused of shooting a 5-year-old girl inside a car last month faced a judge Wednesday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested Patrick Glenn Tuesday, charging him in connection with the shooting that took place inside the car on Nov. 10 near uptown Charlotte.

Glenn is facing seven charges including assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm as a felon.

Authorities said Glenn fired the shot that hit the girl.

Officers told Channel 9 that around 9:30 p.m. the girl was in a car with three adults and another child on 12th Street and College Street.

Police said a silver Nissan Sentra pulled up alongside the car and opened fire.

The 5-year-old girl, Nadia, was asleep in the backseat of the car when the bullet hit her under the shoulder.

"Someone pulled up beside us and just started shooting in the car," said the Nadia's mother, Carrie Gayle.

"Did you know right away that your daughter had been hit?" Channel 9 reporter Mark Becker asked.

"No I did not. I thought everyone was OK, a friend of mine checked her and found that she'd been shot," Gayle said.

The driver of the car that the child was in pulled into a 7-Eleven less than a mile away and called 911.

The child was alert and talking when she was taken to the hospital from the scene, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

Nadia underwent emergency surgery immediately after being shot and is recovering.

Glenn remained in the Mecklenburg County Jail Wednesday. He was appointed a public defender and will be in court in two weeks.
