CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to Musket Lane Friday afternoon, which is off of Sandy Porter Road in Steele Creek.
Police said Phuc Hong Doan, 32, forced his way into the home, and when he was confronted by the homeowner, Doan grabbed a knife.
"We tried to do everything we could just to get him out of our house," homeowner Kim Badger said.
Badger said she fired the fatal shot.
She said Doan fought with her and wrestled with her teenage son, who was also inside.
The Steele Creek mother said she first heard the suspect at the house next door as he attempted to break in.
"That's how loud he was trying to kick the door in," she said.
Badger said her son was left with cuts following the struggle, but was not seriously hurt.

His friend was also inside the house at the time.
"I can't believe this just happened," Badger said. "I really can't."
She said Doan's brother apologized after he learned what happened.
Police said Badger is not facing charges.
