Driver charged with DWI after slamming into CMPD cruiser

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was taken to the hospital after authorities said another driver ran a red light and slammed into the officer's cruiser overnight.

The crash happened just after midnight at the intersection of Tyvola Road and Old Pineville Road in south Charlotte.

Investigators said Officer John Griffin was passing through the intersection when his cruiser was struck by a car driven by Lance Owens.

Police at the scene told Channel 9 that Owens then tried to run from officers who were performing a field sobriety test on him.

Officers quickly caught Owens and arrested him.

Police said Owens had a gun on him and was charged with DWI, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The passenger in Owens' car, Jevail Owens, had two outstanding warrants out for his arrest and he was also taken into custody.

Officials said that Griffin was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.
