CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Family members told Channel 9 a young man has died after robbers shot him and his father during a home invasion Monday morning in south Charlotte.

Officers were called around 3:15 a.m. to a home on Outer Bridge Lane near Providence Road and found Joshua Schulman, 25, and his father suffering from gunshot wounds.

The two were taken to a hospital. The father was released from the hospital, but family members told Channel 9 that Schulman died Monday morning. They said his organs were being donated Wednesday.

Police later confirmed Joshua Schulman died.

Detectives said it appeared that robbery was the motive in the shooting and that the suspects had gotten into the home through the back of the house.

Investigators said Wednesday that it appeared the father and son didn't put up any kind of struggle and there was no reason for them to be shot.

"Why was there such brutality, why did this occur if they were cooperating? All indications are they were cooperative," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Capt. Chris Dozier.

"He was a great first cousin to my two boys," said Joshua's uncle, Gerald Domingue. "He loved football, he loved baseball, he's a huge Carolina Panthers fan."

Schulman graduated from Charlotte Latin and attended the University of Alabama. He was taking a break to earn money as a bartender and was planning on heading back to school.

"He was my baby. He was taken in a very brutal way. We're hoping police find these animals that did this and we're gonna miss him. We're gonna miss him very much. He was an awesome little man," Domingue said.

No arrests have been made and police have not released a suspect description. Officers said the victims could not describe their assailants.

Police investigate if other home invasions connected

Two homes were targeted in Myers Park in home invasions and security cameras captured the possible intruders.

Investigators said those two cases may be linked, but right now, they can’t tie in the Outer Bridge Lane case.

No one has been caught in any of these cases, which is just one more factor that has people worried.

"Well that's concerning,” neighbor Tom Ferrer said. “I suppose they could come back."
