Deadly head-on crash shuts down busy Alexander County highway

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — State troopers in Alexander County were investigating a deadly head-on crash early Friday morning near Taylorsville.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. on Highway 64, near the Paul Payne Store Road overpass, and blocked all lanes of the highway for nearly three hours.

Troopers said a woman driving an SUV crossed the center line, striking a Honda heading eastbound.

The woman driver of the Honda, who is from Hiddenite, died at the scene.

"It's a straight road. There was some kind of distraction going on in the vehicle, obviously,” said Sgt Brian Owenby. “We're going to look into that after we do our interviews."

Investigators said the woman driving the SUV was airlifted to the hospital. Her 4-year-old daughter, who was in a safety seat, was also hospitalized.

No names have been released.
