Democrat, Republican consider Charlotte mayoral race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mayor Jennifer Roberts could soon face challengers for re-election from both parties.

Democratic State Sen. Joel Ford is considering a primary challenge.

Ford is spending the next 60 days talking with Charlotte residents to see if he wants to make a run for the seat.

"If you take a look at the latest decisions by the mayor and city council, one could raise that question if the city has lost its way," Ford said.

Ford said he's willing to work with Raleigh to solve issues like Charlotte's anti-discrimination ordinance which paved the way for House Bill 2.

"I think a lack of listening and a lack of collaboration with state leaders is part of the problem," he said.

In addition to housing and economic growth, public safety is a priority. He's disappointed with Roberts for railing against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and police Chief Kerr Putney during the riots.

"At the time, I called that a failure of leadership to attack the police chief," he said.

Ford said he also supports hiring more police officers without raising taxes.

On the Republican side, Councilmember Kenny Smith, of District 6, is considering a run.

Smith said he is discussing the move with his wife and eight of his closest friends and advisors.

"It's important that you represent all the citizens of Charlotte not just certain groups," Smith said.

Roberts has alienated city council, CMPD, Raleigh and Charlotte businesses, according to Smith.

"It will require someone who can swim in all four pools to help rebuild trust in each of those areas," he said.

Smith said if he runs he will be a fresh choice for voters and he won't be afraid to work across party lines.

"The events of the past year have given me time to pause and reflect," Smith said. "I would say over the past six months, I have started to think that my talents and abilities may be put to a better use for the city. I am giving a strong consideration to running for mayor."

Roberts is holding a fundraiser for re-election Thursday.
