CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Troopers are warning people to watch out on the slick roads after two separate crashes overnight, including one that sent a state trooper to the hospital.
Both crashes involved vehicles stopped along the side of the road.
Troopers told Channel 9 that the drivers involved in those wrecks did not obey the state's “move over” law.
Officials said Trooper J.R. Mann is out of the hospital and will be out of work for a few days after his cruiser was plowed into on Interstate 85 late Thursday night.
Two Highway Patrol cruisers were stopped in the far left southbound lane of I-85, helping two drivers that had crashed when another car slammed into the back of the cruisers, according to investigators.
One cruiser was totaled, as was another vehicle.
Two hours before that crash, a tow truck driver was helping a distressed driver on Interstate 485 when a driver lost control and hit him.
Troopers said regardless of whatever caused that driver to crash, they will be charged because by law people are supposed to drop their speed and move over to the next lane.
Some drivers told Channel 9 a law shouldn't have to tell them to do that -- that it's common sense.
“It's unfortunate,” said Tekoa Phillips. “Someone is out there, like I said, that's serving our community and helping to keep us safe. The least we can do is keep them safe and pull over.”
