Police looking for van they say caused deadly east Charlotte wreck

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An east Charlotte road was shut down for hours Thursday night while police investigated a deadly hit-and-run crash.

The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. along Hickory Grove Road, between Pence Road and East W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Channel 9 learned police are looking for a brown work van they said caused the crash that killed a woman. Detectives went to several nearby business Friday to see if they had surveillance video showing the van.

Witnesses said the van was stuck in traffic when it pulled out in front of 68-year-old Jean Lennon’s Honda CRV.

They told police that Lennon swerved to avoid hitting the van, struck a curb and then crashed into a tree.

"She gets cut off and then has to pay the ultimate price with her life, it's terrible," said delivery driver Mohamed Saleh.

Police said Lennon was not wearing a seat belt and was trapped inside.

Witnesses last saw the van driving on Hickory Grove Road toward Pence Road.

Police believe the suspect vehicle is a late 90's brown American-made work van.

Because the vehicles never made contact, the van doesn't have any damage to it.
