Family to lose access to property after bypass plans change

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A family said they will lose access to their property after the North Carolina Department of Transportation said plans have changed for a future bypass.

The Taylor family made an agreement with the NCDOT in 2000. NCDOT bought land from the family for the future bypass, but told them if they moved their building over a bit it would be safe.

NCDOT also told the family that the agency would build an access road to their building.

Over the years, the design plans changed. NCDOT said they are going to build in the area differently and can no longer give the family an access road.

NCDOT offered to buy the property, but the family said they received a low-ball offer and refused.

The Taylor family will lose access to their property Wednesday and told reporter Greg Suskin that they are furious that NCDOT went back on their original deal.
