Former Panther Steve Smith, military veteran honored Hornets game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was a night of honors Saturday at the Spectrum Center as the Charlotte Hornets honored two men who have made a difference.

The Hornets recognized Maj. Ricky Garvin and former Carolina Panther Steve Smith.

Garvin was honored as this season’s sixth Yellow Ribbon recipient. The Yellow Ribbon program recognizes military members and veterans and their unwavering service to our country during one Hornets home game per month.

During his 25-year career, Garvin led military police units on bases around the world. He now lives in Mooresville where he completed a fellowship with The Mission Continues, a nonprofit organization that empowers veterans to get involved in their local communities. He also volunteers with The First Tee of Greater Charlotte and is involved with the Wounded Warrior Project.

"Major Garvin dedicated his life to our country for 25 years, both protecting our freedom and helping other nations protect their citizens," said Hornets Sports and Entertainment President and COO Fred Whitfield. "He risked his life to uphold democracy in countries around the world, and today he continues to give back through his volunteer work.  It is our honor to thank him for his service."

The Hornets also honored Smith and the Steve Smith Family Foundation’s efforts to promote domestic violence awareness.

"We are also pleased to be able to help promote and support his charitable work with the Steve Smith Family Foundation and the Smith Family Wellness Center as he continues to make an impact on the Charlotte community,” Whitfield said.

Smith also served as an honorary captain of the Hornets during Saturday’s game against the Phoenix Suns.
