McCrory: Trooper kills man in Lumberton floodwater confrontation

LUMBERTON, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says a state trooper shot and killed a man during a confrontation amid the flooding that crippled the city of Lumberton in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

The governor said Tuesday that the trooper and two Robeson County deputies encountered the man while going through high water in a Humvee around 8 p.m. Monday.

McCrory said he has few details about what led to the shooting only saying it happened in "very difficult circumstances."

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. A woman answering the phone in the agency's Fayetteville office said all the agents were out in the field helping with the investigation or flooding and there was no additional information to release.
