Health officials warn of possibility of getting flu twice in a season

Health officials are now warning people about the possibility of getting the flu twice this season.

A total of 63 children have died from the virus this season, including one in South Carolina. Officials haven't released many details but noted that the child died in the Midlands area.

Hospitals across the country have been packed as the number of flu patients continues to surge.

Officials said that some people who have recovered from the flu are getting it again.

“It's possible to get more than one flu infection in a season and we've been hearing reports of that recently,” Anne Schuchat, acting deputy director for the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, said.

CDC officials are urging those who have had the flu and recovered to get a flu shot, and asking people who are now sick to stay at home.

FLU SEASON COVERAGE:

The Food and Drug Administration is now watching reports of shortages for the commonly prescribed drug Tamiflu.

Adults usually take it as a pill, while kids take a liquid form.

Channel 9 called to check the supply of Tamiflu and its generic form at 24 pharmacies across the Charlotte area and found that 10 of them were out of either the generic liquid drug for kids or certain dosages of the generic drug for adults.

Pharmacists said that most insurance only covers the generic form, forcing many to pay out of pocket for the brand-name Tamiflu.
