Sheriff frustrated after woman stabbed: 'We knew he was dangerous'

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing a woman less than 12 hours after bonding out of jail, deputies said.

Deputies in Union County told Channel 9 that Quinton Person choked his girlfriend and threatened her with a gun inside his apartment in Indian Trail.

She ran to an Auto Bell nearby and locked herself in the bathroom.

Witnesses said Person ran after her with a gun.

"We promptly called police," said Auto Bell manager Chipper New. "Thankfully we were able to keep customers and employees safe."

Deputies took Person to jail on several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon. A judge set his bond at $15,000. Because he only had to pay a percentage of his bond, he paid $1,500 and was able to get out of jail just before 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's frustrating," Union County sheriff Eddie Cathey said. "But in this case, I think it's more frustrating because we knew he was dangerous."

Then, around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, he broke into the victim's home on Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road by busting through the back door. He stabbed a woman whom he thought was his girlfriend, but was actually her best friend.

A 911 call detailed the chaos inside the Wesley Chapel home.

"My daughter's best friend got stabbed. He thought it was her," the caller said.

"I need to get the weapon description. What type of weapon?" the dispatcher asked.

"We didn't see the knife. We saw the bat. He had a baseball bat," the caller said.

That woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Person ran from the home but authorities arrested him after he drove through a cow pasture and crashed in front of a church while trying to evade deputies.

The family told Channel 9 they knew he was dangerous. They said Tuesday that he threatened to kill everyone in the family.

"We took a gun off of him yesterday. If he had that gun, we would've had multiple deaths at that residence," Cathey said.

The girlfriend took out a domestic violence protection order against Person. Deputies served him the restraining order while he was in jail.

Person has been charged him with attempted murder.
