Man exposed himself at south Charlotte shopping center, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are looking for a man they say exposed himself to a 29-year old woman Monday night in a south Charlotte shopping center.

The incident happened about 9 p.m. in the Carmel Village Shopping Center off Pineville-Matthews Road, which is tucked among neighborhoods, business parks and near schools.

“I bring my nephew over here for ice cream, so it’s really kind of like a tragedy that something like that would happen out here,” Clint Deas said.

Police said the woman told them it happened in the parking lot of the shopping center. Some restaurants in the center were still open.

“It’s kind of crazy because you don’t think things happen like that in this type of neighborhood,” said Signa Eitelgeorge, who works nearby.

Eitelgeorge hopes police are able to identify and arrest the man.

“There could be kids around if he decides to do it again,” Eitelgeorge said.

Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster looked at crime statistics in the neighborhood. In the past four weeks, there have been two violent crimes within a half-mile of the shopping center, both aggravated assaults.

“We’ve never had any problems,” said Daniel Pearce, who owns Audibel, a hearing company in Carmel Village.

Pearce said the lighting is good, but there are no security cameras in the parking lot, a change he would be willing to pay more in rent to have installed.

“We want it to be safe. We want people to continue to shop here,” Pearce said.

Police have not yet arrested the flasher, or released a description of the man.
