Massive water main break shuts down busy highway in Ballantyne

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A busy highway in the Ballantyne area is closed early Friday morning after a massive water main break, officials told Channel 9.

South Lancaster Highway was blocked near Lullingstone Road, just north of Ballantyne Commons Parkway, as water shot 20 feet into the air while crews worked to fix the massive break.

The break happened around 2:45 a.m. and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were on the scene, blocking the roadway. It was fixed Friday afternoon.

Charlotte Water crews were on scene and were able to shut the water off around 5 a.m. They could not say how long it would take to make repairs.

Charlotte Water officials said the water would be off for Lullingstone, Buxton, Tweedsmuir, Eggleston, Heinsbury Apple Orchard, Buck Creek and other streets in the immediate area.

The southbound lanes of the highway were reopened around 6:15 a.m.

"If you're towards Pineville, that road has been closed for a while, so it causes a big cluster right there," resident Katie Collins said.

There was no word yet on what caused the break.
