McCrory signs $201 million recovery bill for Hurricane Matthew, wildfires recovery

RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Pat McCrory signed the Disaster Recovery Act of 2016 into law Thursday, which will provide $201 million to help residents and communities affected by Hurricane Matthew and wildfires.

Legislators, mayors, county commissioners and members of the governor’s Hurricane Matthew Recovery Committee joined McCrory at the governor’s mansion in Raleigh as he signed it into law.

“Since Hurricane Matthew and wildfires have impacted our state, we have learned valuable lessons for the future and listened to the needs of those still suffering,” McCrory said. “This bill will provide some immediate assistance to citizens as they recover, especially during the Christmas holidays and winter months. This is the first step in long-term recovery efforts.

The Disaster Recovery Act addresses key areas such as housing, local governments, economic development, planning for communities impacted by the hurricane. The bill also includes money for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture to cover costs from wildfires and Hurricane Matthew and to support volunteer fire departments.
