#MeToo campaign bringing awareness for sexual assault

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two words – “Me too,” are taking over social media.

The message behind the campaign speaks volumes.

The hashtag #metoo is all about raising awareness of sexual harassment and abuse.

For days, millions of people have been courageous enough to share their experiences through the simple words.

They are hoping the campaign makes people realize sexual assault is a huge problem.

Officials at “Safe Alliance” in uptown Charlotte said #metoo is sparking necessary conversations.

"With sexual assault, the majority of the cases do go unreported,” said Cori Goldstein, with Safe Alliance. “There is such a secrecy around it, and a stigma, and so a campaign like this can be positive in that light because it’s telling people out there they're not alone, that others have experienced what they have experienced."

Officials say every 98 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted, and one in six women have experienced rape or attempted rape.

The #Metoo campaign began after at least 30 women accused Hollywood power producer Harvey Weinstein of harassment or rape.
