CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library re-opened Saturday after undergoing renovations for more than a year.
The Morrison Regional Library closed in July 2016 for the renovations which added 2,600 square feet to the facility. According to library officials, the renovation included redesigned spaces for children and teens, a new vending café and a patio space.
Additional features in the library include a new computer lab, laptop checkout system and upgraded Wi-Fi.
“Libraries are at the heart of every great community, and this is undoubtedly one of them,” said Jennifer Appleby, chairwoman of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Board of Trustees. “Since 1991, this facility has served our community well. With the renovation, we are ready to offer more technology and multiple meeting room spaces where we can gather, discuss and learn together.”
The renovations at Morrison Regional Library are just the beginning of improvements to the city’s library system.
“Over the next several years, customers will see renovations at several branches,” said library CEO Lee Kessler. “Morrison is the first location to feature new strategies for serving the customer, and we think our community will be pleased with the path we are on.”
Public funding for the $8 million Morrison Regional project was approved in 2014 as part of the 2015 Mecklenburg County Capital Improvement Program. The renovation is the first of several projects in the 2015 CIP for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system.
