Prosecutors to seek death penalty in Charleston church shooting

Dylann Roof

Channel 9 just obtained federal court documents that show federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Dylann Roof.

Roof is the suspect accused of murdering nine people inside Emanuel AME Church in Charleston last year.

This means Roof will face the death penalty in two different courtrooms if he's convicted.

He's scheduled to be tried for the murder charges in state court in January.

His federal court date has not yet been set.

Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch released a statement Tuesday on the decision.

“Following the department’s rigorous review process to thoroughly consider all relevant factual and legal issues, I have determined that the Justice Department will seek the death penalty.  The nature of the alleged crime and the resulting harm compelled this decision," Lynch said.
