Driver charged with DWI after SUV takes out utility poles in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A major intersection in west Charlotte was shut down early Friday morning, causing big problems for drivers.

Police said a driver crashed into utility poles at the intersection of Tuckaseegee Boulevard and Little Rock Road around 4:30 a.m., bringing them down, along with traffic signals.

That person, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital but was expected to be OK. Police said he had been charged with DWI.

A tow truck was called to remove the SUV, which was heavily damaged in the front.

In surveillance video from a nearby store, you can see a car speeding as it hits the pole and the lights all around the intersection go out.

Smoke then started to billow from the car as police arrived on the scene.

Crews were busy working to make repairs and police said the road was expected to reopen around 1 p.m.
