18-year-old man found dead after standoff in NW Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told Channel 9 that an 18-year-old shot and killed himself inside a northwest Charlotte home after a standoff with officers Tuesday morning.

Police called the SWAT Team and negotiators to the home on Sparrow Valley Way, near Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, around 10 a.m. after they said the Timothy Davis barricaded himself inside.

A short time later police said they found Davis dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers told Channel 9 Davis was wanted in connection with a robbery and shooting at a Walmart off Highway 16.

CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team was dispatched to the home earlier in the morning to arrest him when they said they heard a thud inside. That's when the SWAT Team was called, but police told Channel 9 they were never able to make contact with Davis.

“Whenever they cleared the residence they found the suspect already deceased,” Lt. Dondi Pogue said.

The stand-off shut down the street for several hours while neighbors gathered, many with their cellphones pointed toward the action.

“The police officers saw us on the phone and assumed we were going on to tell our Facebook friends that police shot him, Casey Wintons said. “In fact, it didn't happen that way.  He confirmed with us and told us he had shot himself.”

Others remained skeptical.

“As of right now, we don't know anything,” Charlene McNeil said. “We are just out here. All we know is that a young, 18-year-old male is gone.”

Police said they arrested a second suspect earlier in the same attempted robbery and shooting case.

Antonio Wright, 18, was charged with attempted robbery and two counts of assault.
