Teacher put on probation after failing to report abuse in classroom

A former teacher at the Metro School in Charlotte will spend two years on probation for not reporting an assault on a boy with autism in her classroom.

She will also not be allowed to work with children younger than 16.

Caroline Borkey plead guilty after video surfaced showing the assistant teacher in her classroom slapping the 15-year-old boy.

A graduate student researching autism discovered the assault 10 months later, and reported it to the school.

Borkey told the judge it was the only time she saw an assault like that happen in her classroom.

She said the camera was in her classroom for months, and did not record any other incidents of abuse.

She also said she did not report the incident in part because she was afraid of the assistant teacher, William Gates, who plead guilty to the assault and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

The boy’s mother said after the hearing that she was disappointed by the judge’s decision since it did not involve jail time.

Maritsa Romero added that she hopes that Borkey will not have any more contact with children.
