Jury selection begins for man accused of shooting, paralyzing father of 4

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Jury selection is underway Tuesday for one of the men accused of shooting and paralyzing a Cabarrus County father of four.

Terrell Thomas is one of two suspects charged with shooting Greg McKee in November 2015, leaving him paralyzed from the thighs down.

Officials said the shooting happened during an attempted robbery inside a rest stop bathroom off Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County.

PAST COVERAGE:

Police said Thomas and the other suspect, Darren Manuel, both have gang ties. For that reason, the judge requested extra security during the trial. Manuel will spend the next 18 years in prison for the crime after taking a plea deal in October.

Thomas was arrested in New York in December 2015 and extradited to North Carolina in January 2016.

The lead prosecutor argued in court Tuesday that McKee and other witnesses could still be in danger.

Court documents show that Manuel, captured on security camera video, "was conspiring with associates to murder" McKee.

Manuel reportedly told his girlfriend that McKee had "to go."

The prosecutor brought up our area's notorious murder of a Lake Wylie couple to make her point about security concerns.

Bloods member Jamell Cureton orchestrated the murders of Doug and Debbie London from his jail cell so Doug London couldn't testify in a case against him.

The prosecutor told the judge if heightened security isn't put in place, there will be no witnesses.

The judge ruled that there will be a notice on the courthouse door that anyone coming to see this trial must show an ID or get permission from the judge to be there.
