University City neighborhood sees spike in break-ins

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Homeowners in north Charlotte are having trouble sleeping after a string of break-ins where thieves target homes while the families are asleep.

The break-ins have happened more than half a dozen times in the Arbor Hills neighborhood in University City since May.

Residents said the crimes are happening after security leaves, and they believe thieves are familiar with the area or may even live there.

“The common thread is open window or door. The biggest thing is lock your windows and doors at night,” said Lt. James Morrison with the University City Division of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police said they have a person of interest in the case.

Residents are asked to call CMPD if anyone has any information that can lead to an arrest.
