Charlotte Dog Tether Rules Take Effect March 1

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — New rules on how people in Charlotte can tether their dogs take effect March 1.

In the fall, city council passed a tethering ordinance to protect Charlotte area dogs.

The rules are meant to keep pets free from injury and enhance their quality of life when they are restrained outdoors.

The ordinance states that it is imperative for dog owners to select the appropriate restraints for their pet and also that it's important to make sure pets are wearing properly fitting collars and harnesses.

New rules also require:

• The chains or runners used must be at least 10 feet in length.

• Chain must not exceed 10 percent of dog's total weight.

• You should be able to fit two fingers snugly between pet and collar.

• The posts must have hardware that can swivel to prevent tangles.

• The area where the dog is tied up must be clear without obstructions so dog doesn't become entangled.

The ordinance outlines various ways dogs owners can become compliant with the new rules.
